Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire (that’s Glos-ter-shur or if you’re a Dutchess, Glos-ter-shah gentle readers, not Glow-ches-ter-shire) was the site of a battle in 1471.
This ended in the decisive defeat of the House of York (whose badge was a white rose) by the House of Lancaster (whose badge was a red rose, thus this period of English history being called the War of the Roses).
It is the largest event in England and probably one of the top European events.
See the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival website for full details. The photo at the top of the page is from here.
Sir Hawkins and the Dutchess really have to get to this one.
Please note Hawkins’ Historical Happenings play no part in the organisation of the event, we’re just letting people know it’s happening. It you don’t want your event publicised or photos used please contact us.
